Project 365 – January 14 – Still Winter

PROJECT 365

JANUARY 15

STILL WINTER

Today is actually the 18th. I’ve been busy, I’ve been a bit lazy and I’ve continued shooting everyday. The fourteenth had a sharp chill. The sun didn’t come out much and the wind kept biting my face. Here are a couple of photos from the 14 that I liked. Enjoy.

SPRING AHEAD

I know this sounds weird: Every couple of years I’ll have the acute sense of the passing of the solstice. Yeah, it’s really weird. I’m not a nature boy type or anything….it’s just plain weird. 8)  This year the feeling  wasn’t quite as acute, but I felt it sometime last week. The days are getting slightly longer again, and more sun means more UV to warm your body — after all of the snow gets melted of course.

Today’s image is the snow melting from my car. It’s just a sign.  Spring and Summer are creepin up! Thanks for looking.

LIFESTYLE

It’s all about coffee and photography…even though I have to shoot at faster shutter speeds when I drink coffee.

I don’t know if I mentioned this on the last post, but it seems like this first month has me warming up to getting to the blog every single day. I seem to have no problem shooting every single day, but sometimes I’m shooting film, and sometimes I’ll shoot and put my camera away. The point of this is to get the photography that I shoot into your vision and thoughts. You might be seeing a lot of pictures of cameras or random stuff for the first month. I think it’ll pick up here soon with different themes and self assignments.

Here’s my lifestyle photo: coffee and cameras. 8)

COLD AND HOT

Cold

Last night I left something in my car and ran out to get it. I flipped the dome light on and grabbed what I needed and ran back inside. It’s winter and it was cold outside but that’s no biggie; just run out and back in and mission accomplished, right? Well, this morning, when I turned the ignition to fire her up, she sighed and let me know that she was tired. I killed the battery when I left the dome light on. Ugh. Well that’s ok. I’m not really a stranger to cold weather and I didn’t have to go far. I went ahead and hoofed it where I needed to go. I took the Pentax K10D and the Pentax A 50mm f/2. Here is what I shot. Enjoy.

Hot

After sunset, my girlfriend was around and I used her car to jump mine. Unfortunately, even though I have some really long jumper cables, they wouldn’t reach. I had to take out my battery and set it by her car, hang out with it in the dark snowy driveway and freeze my butt off until I had my battery charged up. Laura had a warm kitchen and food on the stove when I got back in. Gotta love it. My turn to enjoy!

GREEK

It’s all Greek to me. That’s pretty much the only thing I feel like saying when it comes to tax season….again. I’m ready for the 1040 long form and schedule CE and the self employment tax and the lists of itemized decuctions and so on and so forth. Today’s photo represents my mind when it’s time to do taxes. Blech. I’m definitely going to need some help with this seasons taxes. Enjoy.

THE KINGDOM

I’ve got an awesome girlfriend. The girl has a full-bred boxer, nice shades, a leather coat, a great taste in music and is a huge hockey fan.  We’ve got a room that has a ‘no dogs allowed’ regulation. It’s awesome. We call it the Serenity Room. This kind of room is a must-have for anyone with 200+ pounds worth of three dogs. Unfortunately for us, I have been keeping my camera gear in there, as you can see, and I’ve got it pretty cluttered up with camera bags and gear.

The picture I shot yesterday is called Kingdom. Obviously, it’s ruled by The King. It’s the place I can go and maintain my gear without interruption or the frustration of  animals running around. I shot this one again on the 6 megapixel Pentax ist*D at 3200 ISO. For those of you who aren’t photographers, that explains the grainy look. It takes a while to get used to, but you grow to love it.  I’ve grown to love this room, too. Enjoy

NOT A BANDIT

Since I’ve bragged about my girlfriend, I should probably put up a shot of her eh? This is her portrait that I shot today. We were cleaning out the fridge when I shot this. You see, we love food and it’s so hard to throw away. We took it way too far this time. We hadn’t eaten our leftovers and they spoiled; they we’re totally stinky. Ew. So she got out the ninja bandanna an and proceeded to be a non-bandit whilst protecting her sense of smell. To be honest, I didn’t think it smelled much at all. It did get me a cool portrait though. 8)

EXPLORATION

This is already turning out to be an exciting year in photography for me! I feel like I’ve been reintroduced what what it means to have the skill to craft a well exposed frame. I’m developing a ‘new eye’ for what and how I want to shoot and I’m so excited to turn this leaf. Today is a set of photography rather than a single photo.  Don’t worry, I did plenty of shooting today in search of my photo for today, and I have one, but it isn’t the feature presentation today.

For Christmas I received a kit to build a home made camera. I took a lot of care to make sure that I built it perfectly, loaded it, and went to town. Hope you enjoy

And here is the photo that I actually shot today, just to show I was shooting 8)

This was shot in low(ish) light on a 2003 digital camera, the Pentax ist*D and the 1980 Promaster lens. I was over at Justin’s place because he broke his back and of course I had to let him beat me at chess…

One More Introduction

Again I was super busy today. With as much running around as I did today, I’m very glad to be sitting on my chair in front of my desk. It’s only a shame that it’s almost 11 p.m. by the time I’m getting around to this post. I’m going to be quick. I want to get into bed. So, here we go.

Today’s photo is a portrait of the camera that shot yesterday’s photo.

This is a Pentax K10D with a Pentax DA* 16-35 f/2.8 attached. Yesterday, there was a wireless, off-camera flash in use that did not appear within the frame. Today it is appearing within the frame, but it is behind the camera illuminating from the rear. It is still out of site, but within the frame. I figured that since there were two other of the same flash in yesterday’s photo, you’ll already know what it looks like.\

Hope you enjoy today’s photo. I’m off to bed.

Meet the family

January 5, 2011

I’ve only got a few minutes during a very busy day today to get this shot and posted. No editing for today, I haven’t even looked at the shot yet. I won’t see it full size until I upload it. Wish me luck!

Each piece of gear shown is functional and used regularly.

Pictured are the following:

Row 1 - Nikon 70-210 f/4, Nikon N2020, Pentax 540AFGZ

Row 2 – Pentax DA* 50-135 f/2.8, Pentax ist*D/Pentax DA 18-55 f/3.5-5.6, Pentax 540FGZ, Promaster Flash

Row 3 – Homade Pinhole Camera (you’ll see some photos from it this year!), Prism for the Nikon F4, Pheonix 19-35 f/3.5-4, Pentax A 50mm f/2, promaster 28-70 f/3.9 (silver side up), and Sigma 28-80 f/3.5-5.6 (laying on it’s side)

Row 4 – Canonet Rangefinder GII -QL17, Nikon F4, and Sigma 70-300 f/4-5.6

The gear is laying on top of a puzzle of Times Square, New York which is on top of a framed print of The Rat Pack.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    The image was shot at a 2MP resolution in-camera. I think I’m going to do the entire project in low-res.

Each of these pieces of gear a different tool in the box for me. Every one has a different personality to shoot with, a different stigma depending on what venue I’m in whether it be personal or business, and creates a unique product. This is the family I’m introducing you to. We all work together to create the best images we can. We’re doing it for you and it comes with strong personal gratification to shoot by trade.

Hope you enjoy today’s image and thanks for checking out my blog.

January 4, 2011

It is a beautiful and frigid morning. Early sunshine  is still coming in from the East – although the sun might be setting by the time I finish this post – and it has the neighborhood glowing. The temperature is about 4 degrees below freezing, and the dogs are rowdy and want to go outside. It’s a  cross between perfect warm golden light and frozen toes and it’s today’s photo for a reason. I know, I know it’s just a picture of a tree in the yard; but it’s more. It’s morning light. It’s early in the year, early in the day and we have a LOT to do this year!  Part of my new years resolve is to work harder (better?) and get everything done that I can, including finding the right R&R time.  I’ll be shooting more, posting more and I even hope to earn a bit more this year if God wills it.

There is so much to do just today and I’m looking forward to try and bust it all out.  Even though I technically have my photo of the day up,  I’m going to have my camera on me pretty much all day today. I might not go many places or shoot anything out-of-the-ordinary but I’m going to form some images of my everyday life. That’s the real nature of this exercise, right? If I can shoot and post a picture to my blog from my phone in about thirty seconds then I should probably make a proper attempt at this 365 project and delve into it.

I’m already starting to think of this project as having developed quite a bit. From ideas of pairing daily photographs with articles, to having themed weeks, to pressing the envelope in a journalistic style, I’ve got my creative juices flowing. You five people who read my blog, hopefully, will enjoy it! Let me know if you want to challenge me with any themes or photographs; this is an exercise for me so bring the challenges.
